Wide open, quietly yours.
Made by people who live outside.
Mike and Monica Schwenne are lifelong California adventurers who live in Santa Cruz. They have explored oceans, mountains and forests since childhood, and they have hosted guests since 2010, as Superhosts, with curated, experiential stays in Santa Cruz and Mariposa County.
Mike was a professional wakeboarder for decades. In 2002 he started West Coast Camps, a wakeboard camp on Lake McClure run from houseboats, so guests were glamping on the lake long before it had a name. Riders came from around the world, the camp was in the wakeboard magazines, and Mike trained some of today's top riders. That camp is how the family came to know and love this corner of the foothills.
Mike was not looking for land outside Santa Cruz County. A realtor friend kept telling him to come see this property, and Mike finally went just to appease him. The view stopped him. After all his years in the area, he had no idea views like this existed here: nearly 500 acres high on Penon Blanco Peak, surrounded by a couple thousand acres of BLM land, with a kind of privacy that is rare even in the foothills.
He saw the vision right away: a boutique place to stay with vintage-inspired Airstreams, a nod to the Spartan trailers that once stood on this hillside. Finding the right units, building the infrastructure and building the trails took years. The trails were built by Jaret Brantley. We cannot be here all the time, and a ranch takes a lot of care, so this is our way of sharing this gem with the world.
Monica and our team look after guests. Ask them about the trails, the herd, or the best place to watch the sunset.
The land
- Nearly 500 private acres on the southern side of Penon Blanco Peak, off Penon Blanco Road near Coulterville.
- Five year-round springs and a seasonal creek keep parts of the land green, even in late summer. See the springs.
- In the wet months, a seasonal creek spills over smooth granite in a chain of small waterfalls and little pools, dropping a couple hundred feet down the hillside.
- A small herd of Highland cattle: Jack the bull, who keeps a gentle eye on the herd and the young ones, and about a dozen standard Highland cows with red coats, plus Lola and Lemon, our two black micro mini Highland cattle, and Pearl the mini donkey. Lola, Lemon and Pearl greet guests at Coffee with the Cows, free every morning at 9 AM, with coffee and cocoa served. Meet the Highlanders.
- Views toward Lake McClure from the ridges, and private trails from every door.
- What is next: safari tents and cabins, and a thermal spa planned for 2027. See what's coming.
